Nur noch wenige Tage und dann geht das neue BAD RELIGION Album in die
Bemusterung. Erste Rückmeldungen bestätigen, was wir schon im Vorfeld
gesagt haben: DAS ALBUM IST DER HAMMER und wer glaubte, dass BR ihr
Pulver bereits verschossen hatten, wird hier eines Besseren belehrt.
Wer Interesse an einem Interview hat, meldet sich bitte beim STARKULT
Ansprechpartner seines Vertrauens. Anfang Februar 2002 wird die Band für
drei Shows nach Deutschland kommen. Wir halten Euch auf dem Laufenden.

Wir hatten die Band um Tim Armstrong (Rancid) Gattin Brody Armstrong ja
schon im letzten Newsletter vorgestellt, wer das Debut kennt, weiß man
was erwarten darf: 1a Streetpunk, der nicht sehr weit vom Rancid Sound
anzusiedeln ist. Dreckig, laut und doch alles Hits. Der absolute
Geheimtipp. THE DISTILLERS kommen mit Agnostic Front auf Tour.
EPITAPH PRESSEMITTEILUNG I
We are proud to introduce Hellcat’s latest signing: Danish Psychobilly
trio THE NEKROMANTIX.

Kim (standup bass and singer) wrote a little introduction message:
“Hi, We're the Nekromantix from Denmark. The band was formed on a cold
Northern winter night in 1989. We play psychobilly which is an obscure
mix of punk, rockabilly and metal, spiced with horror flick lyrics. With
low budget releases on small pure independent labels and absolutely no
money spent on promotion the Nekromantix has achieved quite an
impressive following worldwide. With an outrageous wild live show
Nekromantix attract people from many different subcultures. The band has
been touring heavily the past years including countries like Finland,
Sweden, Germany, UK, France, Holland, Belgium, Japan, US and Denmark.
After a USA tour in November 2000 a demo made its way into the hands of
Tim Armstrong. Tim had been into the Nekromantix for years and in
February this year Tim gave Kim Nekroman a call in the middle of the
night, expressing his interest in having Nekromantix signed to Hellcat
Records, the deal was down. The Nekromantix are: Kim Nekroman on Coffin
shaped upright bass + vocal. Peter Sandorff on Guitar + back vocal
Kristian Sandorff on Drums.”
The band has just finished a very succesful German Tour though
unfortunately had to cancel their planned US tour due to traveling
problems. NEKROMANTIX have just completed work on a new record, their
first for Hellcat, entitled 'Return Of The Loving Dead', due for release
in January 2002. A song off the album, “Who Killed The Cheerleader” will
be included in Give ‘Em The Boot compilation, volume III. Alongside
Tiger Army, NEKROMANTIX are Hellcat’s little “contribution” to the

The Promise Ring release new cd on Anti Inc in April 2002
Milwaukee, Wisconsin based band THE PROMISE RING have signed a worldwide
contract with Anti Inc, a division of Epitaph Records and home to such
artists as Tom Waits, Tricky, Merle Haggard and DJ Muggs. In Spring 2002
THE PROMISE RING will debut on Anti with their fourth full-length album.
The new as yet untitled cd has been produced by Stephen Street, known
for his work with The Smiths, Blur and The Cranberries, and has been
recorded in Surrey, England.
After THE PROMISE RING frontman Danny vonBohlen last year successfully
recovered from a brain tumor surgery he says: “I’m suspicious that the
doctor stole all my fast songs”. No longer would they limit themselves
to things loud and fast in the guitars-bass-drums vein. So on this new
album, vonBohlen’s precocious lyrics are wrapped in layers of piano,
drum machines and the odd junky synthesizer punctuated with Jason
Gnewikow’s tricky guitar hooks. More details soon.

Aussehen tun sie ja ein bißchen wie die Supersuckers, klingen tun sie
ein wenig nach den Doughboys und sind somit schonmal per se interessant
für alle die auf gut abgehangenen live erprobten und hochmelodischen
Punkrock stehen. Muss man hören, wird man mögen und dann
weiterempfehlen.

Dem New Acoustic Movement zugehörig sei das Solo Album von KEVIN DEVINE,
Sänger des US-Emo-Trios The Miracle of 86 Songs sagt das Info und meint
damit, dass das Album stilistisch in die Nähe von Kings of Convenience,
Dashboard Confessional gerückt werden kann. Stimmt. ABER AUCH Kevin
Kinney, Billy Bragg oder Elliot Smith dürfen angeführt werden. Ganz
ruhig und ganz großartig.

2000 wurden die COUCH POTATOES von der Presse zur besten Elektronik Band
Kanadas gekürt. Grooviger Electro Funk ist wohl die passende
Kurzbeschreibung des nun vorliegenden Albums. Die Single -cool ride- war
in Frankreichs Clubs ein absoluter Renner.

Die beiden Themen von REC90, SISTER SONNY und POOR RICH ONES sind zwei
wirklich sehr-sehr gute Indiepopthemen, was natürlich nur eine sehr
grobe Umschreibung ist. Hervorragendes Songwriting, gute Ideen, tolle
Stimmung, mit anderen Worten - ganz großartig. SISTER SONNY erinnern
dabei ein bißchen an Walkabouts meets Midnight Choir, während man zu den
POOR RICH ONES vielleicht Radiohead (2.tes Album) oder Manic Street
Preachers (in Sachen Melancholie) oder Lightning Seeds (in Sachen
hymnische Popsongs) heranziehen darf.PRO wurden übrigens von MArk
Trombino (Blink182/Jimmy eat World) produziert. Was aber in beiden
Fällen nicht heißen soll, dass es sich hier um Plagiate handelt, sondern
- wie immer - Euch nur eine ungefähre Vorstellung vermitteln soll.

Floodgate, Soundgarden, Black Crowes, Kyuss, die Liste der
heranzuziehenden Bandeinflüsse/ Vergleiche kann im Falle der Holländer
ganz schön lang sein, greifen sie doch auf ihrem Debut
-MUD‘N‘GLITTER- Stilelemente wie 70‘s Rock, Wüstenrock, Grunge, Sleaze
etc. auf. Gekrönt wird dieser wuchtige Soundmix von teilweise 4
stimmigen Vocals und einer überaus wuchtigen Produktion von Pieter
Kloos (Motorpsycho, Celestial Season, Suimasen). Bassist Arjen Rienks
dürfte einigen vielleicht noch bekannt sein als Tieftöner bei 7Zuma7.

Nachdem die das aktuelle NIGHTHAWKS Album auf Platz 3 der aktuellen Jazz
Charts eingestiegen ist, haben wir nun die weitere Promokoordination
übernommen. Hier nun ein auszug aus dem info, wie er nicht besser das
Album beschreiben könnte....

innere Lebensgefühl des Menschen in der modernen Großstadt wieder."
Nighthawks: das sind coole Grooves und atmosphärische Samples, auf denen
die klare Stimme einer einsamen Trompete, mal schneidend artikuliert,
mal sehnsuchtsvoll haucht. Mit diesem Rezept gelang Nighthawks-Produzent
und Bassist Dal Martino zusammen mit Trompeter Reiner Winterschladen,
beides gefragten Musikern in der europäischen Jazz- und Pop-Szene, ein
äußerst erfolgreicher Coup. Zueinander gefunden haben die beiden über
Aufnahmen und Auftritte mit Trance Groove. Mit großem Geschick haben es
Nighthawks verstanden, Bilder von der inneren Leinwand einzufangen, zu
konzentrieren und aufzuarbeiten für die Aufführung im Kopf des Hörers.

The new Tricky is a happier, more relaxed individual. There are still
dark textures in his music but the change for the better in his life is
reflected on Blowback. "My life has gone full circle," he says. "I had a
