1. Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Redemption Song

www.strummersite.com

(Hellcat/SPV, VÖ: 15.12.2003)

Single mit den folgenden Tracks: Redemption Song, Arms Aloft and Armagideon Time (Live).

The death of Joe Strummer, at the age of fifty, on December 22 last year came as a deep shock. However the colossal response of the media to Joe's passing was a tribute to his enduring status as a musical archetype and legend. For example, in addition to front-page coverage in most major newspapers, The London Times also ran a respectful editorial lamenting his demise; television news carried lengthy tributes; at the Newcastle-Liverpool match at St James's Park on Boxing Day, before a crowd of 52,000 football fans, a minute's silence was held for the former Clash frontman before kick-off, an extraordinary gesture, but one that showed how Joe's combination of toughness and sensitivity touched people's hearts. There is no exaggeration in the way that he is now spoken of as part of a tradition of folk protest singers stretching back to the likes of Woody Guthrie, on an iconic level with the likes of John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley.

In fact, Streetcore, Joe Strummer's new CD, recorded largely with his group the Mescaleros, includes a version of Marley's reflective masterpiece "Redemption Song," which he had recorded with the American producer Rick Rubin; always an adept reinterpreter--you think of such classics as "Police and Thieves," "I Fought the Law," and "Brand New Cadillac"--Joe's version of the song that is perhaps Marley's greatest work is almost as extraordinary as the original, and a tribute to one of his greatest inspirations. Guest musicians on "Redemption song" include Rick Rubin on piano, Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Beck and Johnny Cash) guitar and Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) organ.

Streetcore features Joe's most immediate and accessible material since his early work with the Clash, evidence of a man at the height of his creative powers. Other than "Redemption Song," the record is comprised of eight original songs, as well as a cover of the 1952 Bobby Charles' classic "Before I Grow Too Old," re-named "Silver and Gold." The titles of the original tunes are: "Coma Girl," "Get Down Moses," "Long Shadow," "Arms Aloft," "Ramshackle Day Parade," "All In A Day" (co-written with Danny Saber), "Burnin' Streets," and "Midnight Jam."

In the meantime, "Redemption Song" and "Long Shadow" were recorded last April at Rick Rubin's house in Los Angeles. Originally intended to be submitted as a song for Johnny Cash to record, "Long Shadow," a thoughtful, almost desperately moving ballad, is ironically in many ways Joe's own "Redemption Song," a tune that contains a measure of prescience in its elegiac reflection upon his own struggles; the song was written on the spot at Rubin's house, over a period of three days, with Smokey, Johnny Cash's guitarist, also working on the number and playing on it with Joe.

2. Heideroosjes - Ebersberg

www.heideroosjes.com

(Epitaph/SPV)

21.11.2003: Wangen - Tonne
22.11.2003: Ebersberg - JUZ
24.11.2003: Regensburg - Alte Mälzerei
27.11.2003: Wiesbaden - Kulturpalast
28.11.2003: Münster - Metro
29.11.2003: Wesel - JZ Karo

This is the new album of the band that toured across South Africa, performed in a township (Roelofs: "So there we were, a white band playing punk music, perhaps even the most white kind of music there is. For the first time in my life, I felt that the colour of my skin mattered.") and now invited the youngsters they had met over there to sing along on one of the new album tracks Mamelodi Melodies.

SINema has been written in punk, metal, rock, hardcore and folk and is the report of a world in which, according to Marco Roelofs, "reality is even more bizarre than the movies". The reality of missing rolls of film (Come Clean, a song with a nasty taste to it, which Roelofs wrote after having seen the documentary A Cry From The Grave, is about the Netherlands' political failure in the Muslim-enclave Srebrenica), fatal friendships ("Dan Breekt De Hel Los" or "That's When Hell Breaks Loose") and "De Portier" or "peckerheads in patent leather shoes". Sometimes Roelofs dreams of escaping that reality (Delete Me), now and then he spits on it (The World, the most boiling song on the album), but ever so often he embraces the folly. Which results into Ebersberg, a hilarious song about experiences from touring in Germany. And Damclub-Hooligan, which is about a hooligan who crosses the country while demolishing it in name of his draughts club "Ons Steentje". This is the single that preceded SINema and is being accompanied by an absurd video.

That uncle on the family party, he would say that Heideroosjes have made their most "mature" album yet. Whatever. The fact is that the band has never before put so much effort into an album (and you cán trust them to put their effort into something: for a punk band Heideroosjes have a suspiciously large work ethic) and has never before sounded that versatile. And now on tour across Europe! Roelofs: "We can hardly wait. We get agitated and uptight from not having performed for a long time." Soon coming to a club in your neighbourhood: live-SINema. And you may want to make a note of December, 2014: the twenty-fifth anniversary.

3. The Heroines - King Of My Dark Heart

www.theheroines.net

(Wolverine/Soulfood, VÖ: 17.11.2003)

EP mit drei Tracks und Videoclip: King Of My Dark Heart (+ Video), I Fell, Zero.

Sehr gut produzierter Glam Pop Punk mit einem Schuss Garage.
L7 meets THE DONNAS meets SLEATER-KINNEY meets THE MUFFS meets TURBONEGRO.

4. V.A. - It's Not Just Boys Fun

www.wolverine-records.de

T-Bone), Rock'n'Roll (Z.B. Camaros), Glam Punk (Z.B. Yucca Spiders), 60ties Punk (Z.B. Boonaraaas), Emo Punk (Z.B. Flamingo 50), Ramones-Punk (z.B. The Hi-Tops) oder 77 Punk (The NY Rel-X).
