TOM WAITS SETS CAREER RECORD;
NEW ALBUMS BLOOD MONEYAND ALICE
DEBUT AT #32 AND #33 ON THE BILLBOARD CHART
Anti- recording artist TOM WAITS has set an all-time career record this
week entering the Billboard charts in the #32 and #33 positions. Blood
Money debuted at #32 with 32,862 units sold while Alice took #33 selling
32,360 units. This is the highest debut of any TOM WAITS album. Anti
Records
also released TOM WAITS' last album, the Grammy Award-winning Mule
Variations in 1999 which was the best selling record of his career with
over one million sold worldwide.
The overwhelming sales success has not been limited to just the US, the
excitement is also being felt abroad. Blood Money came in at #2 in
Denmark, #4 in Ireland and Norway, #5 in Austria, #6 in Italy, #9 in
Germany, #12 in Sweden, #14 in Canada, #21 in the UK and #26 in
Australia. Alice placed
#3 in Austria, Denmark and Norway, #5 in Ireland and Italy, #10 in
Germany, #13 in Sweden, #20 in the UK, and #26 in Australia.
Both Blood Money and Alice have been receiving rave reviews as well.
Rolling Stone declared "his voice now is pure theatre, a weapon of
pictorial emphasis and raw honesty...written as theatrical scores, these
records bloom on their own. They are also testament to WAITS' gift for
making tangible
magic..." And MOJO proclaimed, "The first (Alice) is vaporous, layered,
beautifully evocative, with moments of discordant madness; the second
(Blood Money) discordant, mad, with moments of tender almost unbearable
loveliness.Get both and you have a photograph and its negative."
Not only do Blood Money and Alice mark an unprecedented achievement for
TOM WAITS, but the success story also resulted in Epitaph (Europe =
ANTI, a division of Epitaph)) achieving one of it's largest grossing
weeks since the company began over ten years ago.
Earlier releases this year from such artists as the re-united BAD
RELIGION, the white hot Swedish rock band THE HIVES, the critically
acclaimed THE PROMISE RING and pop punk scenesters MILLENCOLIN, combined
with Epitaph's catalog of punk legends including RANCID, NOFX and THE
OFFSPRING, have made this a record setting week in Epitaph sales
history.
