PRESSEMITTEILUNG II
Jet Johnson sign to Seriously Groovy
Jet Johnson have signed exclusively to Seriously Groovy.
Effortlessly cool, tuneful and pretty, Jet Johnson become the latest in a line of illustrious bands to become Seriously Groovy Recording Artists. Jet Johnson join the Seriously Groovy roster, alongside econoline, Emetrex and Mother Goose, and represent some of the most innovative and exciting indie talent around; following a label history which includes Best (aka McLusky), Mo-ho-bish-o-pi, No Wings Fins or Fuselage, Inhaler and others.
The London based band, which consists of Caroline Nesbø (guitar/vox), Gavin Baker (guitar) and Kevin Smith (drums) with various guest bassists, was formed in 2000 by Caroline and Gavin after meeting at a gig Caroline was playing. Gavin was charmed enough to grin madly at her all night until she pitied him and took him home.Caroline is from Aalesund, Norway and used to be in the band Peachfuzz. Gavin is from Frome, Somerset and has worked in several successful projects, still being involved in the well reputed Billy Mahonie and Glider. Kevin is in Reynolds, and also guests on a further project of Gavin's, Meets Guitar.
The band have appeared on several indie-label splits and just released their "Tula" mini album, which is already picking up rave reviews and airplay. Most recently Jet Johnson were interviewed for Comes With A Smile (and appeared on the cover CD), as well as performing a live session for Resonance FM. Plans are now afoot for the Seriously Groovy records... in January 2003 Jet Johnson are going into 93 Feet East Studios to record their debut album for release later on that year.
"They create moments of autumnal grace and elegance, before switching into a more driven and harder groove that highlights their versatility." [Rock City]
====== Labelbiographie ======
Dave Holmes and Lorraine Snape became Seriously Groovy in 1995 in response to their combined talents, ability to create innovative ideas and love of alternative music. Shortly after they moved to their London address in Soho, Dominic Free joined the management team in 2001.
Seriously Groovy Music Ltd is a production based Record Label and Music Publisher specialising in the development of new alternative artists.
Our mission is to search out extraordinary new recording Artists and work with them to produce the most influential alternative sounds. We aim to continue in the great tradition of UK indie labels in shaping the future of the music industry. The history of Seriously Groovy so far proves our dedication and commitment to A&R at ground level, and highlights our success in seeking out consistently exciting new material and developing it.
Seriously Groovy's initial signings were Ventral and Inhaler, closely followed by No Wings Fins or Fuselage. These artists had a varying amount of success both at home in the UK with support from John Peel, Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, RockSound, etc. and in continental Europe, where they went front page on several glossy magazines.
During 1998/99 we signed Mo-ho-bi-sho-pi and Best from Cardiff in Wales, and Sludgefeast from the South Coast. Mo-ho-bish-o-pi achieved a phenomenal response from the UK media, and went on to sign to V2 Records and Sony Music Publishing. Their album was recorded with Don Flemming of Dinosaur Jr. fame. Best became McLusky and signed to Beggars Banquet's Too Pure label. Their latest album recorded with Steve Albini was released in 2002. Sludgefeast picked up rave reviews from the Melody Maker and NME amongst others.
In 2000 we focussed our attentions on finding new material and went on to sign Emetrex, a Boston based band formed by Rick Lescault who used to play guitar for Wheat, and Mother Goose from Finland, who were once signed to Mute's Blast First label alongside Sonic Youth. By the end of 2001 we had brought local London act Econoline on board.
Emetrex achieved initial success when NME tipped them as "On the Up" and have since picked up rave reviews from Melody Maker, Mojo, The Sunday Times, Q Magazine, RockSound, Classic Rock, Get Rhythm and others. They've also been playlisted by BBC London, Xfm and the Student Broadcast Network, as well as picking up other spot plays nationally and recording several radio sessions. Having released an EP, 3 singles and an album, as well as touring the UK twice, the band are currently working on a new batch of recordings for a follow-up album in 2003.
Mother Goose's first Seriously Groovy release was picked up on by BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq (closely followed by John Kennedy at Xfm). Having toured the UK twice since signing to us, the promotion of their album 'Junior Magic' led to reviews flooding in from The Guardian newspaper, RockSound, Get Rhythm, Big Issue and others.
Econoline immediately solicited attention and picked up rave reviews from Sleazenation, NME and Kerrang!, with airplay from BBC Radio 1 DJ's Steve Lamacq & John Peel, Xfm, and many others. As well as the Seriously Groovy releases, we've placed their material on several compilation albums and splits, including Fierce Panda's 'Mosh & Go' alongside Jimmy Eat World. The debut album 'Music Is Stupid' was released in the UK at the end of 2002 and picked up rave reviews from Kerrang!, The Independent, Record Collector and Rock Sound, who also gave them a photo feature, and included a track on their cover CD. A John Peel has just been recorded for broadcast in December. Econoline regularly tour the UK, having supported the likes of Tristeza, Karate, The Lapse, Monsoon Bassoon, Enon, Les Savy Fav, and others, and after some Dutch dates in Dec '02 they plan their European onslaught for 2003.
As we near 2003 our focus is on supporting and developing those that have entrusted their careers to us: Econoline, Emetrex and Mother Goose. Plus, we're proud to announce a new signing, the beautiful Jet Johnson, formed by Caroline Nesbo of Peachfuzz and Gavin Baker of Billy Mahonie. So, expect plenty more Seriously Groovy tunes from Seriously Groovy Guys and Gals coming your way soon.

Econoline
Album : Music Is Stupid
VÖ : 24.02.03 (ACHTUNG: BITTE NICHT VOR MÄRZ 03 besprechen!!!)
Label/Vertrieb: Seriously Groovy / Alive
"Ian Scanlon's vocal tussling poignantly with the deafening walls of guitars until your heart breaks in two. More, please" NME
Econoline Presse
Kerrang! 12 Oktober 2002
"...It´s a turbulent, fraught mix, frontman Ian Scanlon´s poignantly scabbed larynx wrangling with some pretty burnished melodies while his band crib explosive textures from the likes of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. On the fractured "i´m Plaqued", the effect is akin to a nerve throbbing and throbbing, the tension deliciously never quite releasing. The cellofuelled "EmV", however, evokes the broken-hearted grace of an angstier Neil Young. A band of extremes, then- and all the better for it." 4 von 4 Punkten
NME 12. Mai 2001
" Sounding like Dinosaur Jr, Get-Up Kids and The Cure swiping at swarms of bees, London quartet Econoline´s Yankophile tendencies are perfectly illustrated by the heartbreak shading of their sandpaper guitars and quiet-loud dynamics on this their second single. If the term emocore wasn´t so redolent of middle-class teens wearing overpriced Americam work clothes, it´d be a perfect tag for this pocket-epic of turmoil, singer Ian Scanlon´s vocal tussling poignantly with the deafening walls of guitars until your heart breaks in two. More, please."
Rock Sound #42
"Econoline evoke memories of both classic indie rock and hordcore´s more intelligent moments. Without going too much into a list of influences let´s just say this band´s record collection really started to affect them when My Bloody Valentine claimed noise as part of a melody, J Mascis gave hardcore the guitar solo and the likes of Hüsker Dü stamped their identity on the more decerning rock fans collections. "Missing From Pictures" is a beautifully patient song that never seems to actually explode, but eventually its heart does briefly beat louder, only to quietly fade away. Whereas "Full Tar" is a more formulaic blend of ectatic loud, with peaceful quiet that still excites no matter how predictable it may seem." 7 von 10 Punkten Stuart Wright
The Independent 16. November 2002
"Econoline are from London, but are steeped in the American rock underground, as populated by the likes of Build to Spill, Dinosaur Jr and Husker Du. While their music is nothing new, their skills at enhancing a tune with atmospherics has produced a very energetic album." 4 von 5 Punkten
The Big Issue Oktober 2002
"Britain is breeding a generation of beat poets; born old, reflective and regretful. The EMO scene has its own ´zines, its own support network and a belief system embodied in practical haircuts and hard-wearing clothes. Econoline fit right in. Full Tar and its B-sides fall short of the indecipherable abandon and bittersweet pang of Kids Near Water or Hundred Reasons, but could easily share the same stage. Fuzzed guitar and unfussiy recording hide the actual word but you know they really mean whatever it is they´re saying. Until everyone´s happy all of the time, we´ll still need musical soial workers." Mei Lewis
Logo #6
"London´s Econoline can be described in the same breath as the loose-limbed, slightly ramshackle jangle-rock of Build To Spill, Braid Hüsker Du and Sleater-Kinney. "Music Is Stupid" is so much more than the sum of its supposed influences though: minor variations on the quiet-loud-quiet template wrestle lank-haired emo to the ground courtesy of scuzzy, edge of breakdown caterwauling guitars that cosy up with elegant cello interludes and Ian Scanlon´s "me Me, ME" wail."

Emetrex
Album : Metacomet
VÖ : 17.03.03
Label/Vertrieb: Seriously Groovy / Alive
"the latest in a long, fine line of lo-fi American bands…triumphantly rides a howl of distressed keyboards and abused guitars" Mark Edwards - The Sunday Times
Emetrex Presse
Mojo 22 August 2000
"Emetrex, a three piece from Boston USA, are responsible for baeutifully sweeping soundscapes of raw alternative power. Produced by Wheat´s acclaimed producer, Jeff Lipton, the band also includes Wheat member Rick Lescault, along with Dave McGlynn and Ben Hedlund. It was in Rick´s living room that Emetrex´s experimentation with drum loops, samples and song snippets finally merged mellow waves of sound fused with cracked lyrics of love. For those that love the eclectism of Moby and Beck, Emetrex marry both in one album."
NME 14 Oktober 2000
"Yeazh, it, like, features a painting by Scott from Wheat on the cover. And it´s sort of like Grandaddy and Sparklehorse and Lampchop. Yeah. Cool. It´s like laconic Yank lo-fi that just sort of burrows its way into your skull, like demonpossessed and badly bloodrusted farm machinery. And then sits there. Throbbing. If Steven King was loads better and he was a band he´d still be blown offstage by Emetrex. Seriously spooky mothafuckery. And a quick message to Scott from Wheat. Scott- are five? Are you retarded? Were you born blind and with no hands? No? Then learn to paint, you wanker."
Rock Sound Mai 01
"Whispered emotions and slow burning guitars dominate this inspired debut from the heart warming Emetrex. With its strength in its patience, "Metacomet" may not be an immediate recipe for success, but the rewards that come to the listener who takes the time to listen to the album more than once, more than twice, more than thrice are plentiful and should earn the band a place in the affections of even the most discerning music fans. The long player´s softness plays itself magestically against the instrumentation that builds its foundations on accustics sweetness before developing to a swirl of understated distortion, and the lack of big choruses takes nothing away in its impact. Though they are not just another Wheat or Lampchop, Emetrex do sound pleasantly like a band you´d expect to have been snapped up by City Slang." 3 1/2 von 5 Punkten
The Sunday Times 2 Dezember 2001
"...Whenthey do the loud, fuzzy-guitar stuff, they sound like a more focused Grandaddy; when they do the slow, drifty stuff, they sound llike a less idiosyncratic Mercury Rev. Among the loud ones is King of Animals, where, treating us like spoilt kids, Emetrex don´t make us wade through the bread and butter of verses; instead, we´re force-fed with the rich, gooey cake of chorus after chorusafter chorus. ...The second half of the album is particularly fine, consisting as it does of a sonic roller coaster that takes you from the sprawling, half-formed Let It, where the merest suggestion of a song comes coated with angelic backing vocals, to Staring at the Stone, which triumphantly rides a howl of distressed keyboards and abused guitars." ME
Q Magazine Dezember 2001
"...Emetrex like to live within enigmas and riddles. It´s an obsessions shared with much of the US alt-rock fraterenity- from Slint to Grandaddy to Wheat. Here low-key, yearning vocals sit back in a murky mix, alongside Lescault and Mike Paulo´s knitted guitar throb. It all suggests boys who don´t get outdoors much, leaving too much time for sad self-absorption. ..Laconic and beautiful though it is, they´d probably kill for tunes of a Grandaddy/ Mercury Rev standard."

Mother Goose
Album : Junior Magic
VÖ : 17.03.03
Label/Vertrieb: Seriously Groovy / Alive
"bears a resemblance to the creations of Nick Cave during the more bizarre and freakishly surreal moments" - Victoria Durham, RockSound
Mother Goose Presse
Guardian 18 Januar 2002
"...Junior Magic is bizarrely brilliant. Thge Finnish trio reveal their hyperactive imaginations and love of the Fall in the "ah-yah,ah yah" chants of opener Modest Dreamer and the surreal ditty Snow Dome. And they have a pop moment with Top Tune Mate!, slightly unsettling retro hip-swinger that Charles Manson might have put on his audition tape for the Monkees. The song speed by, taking in a tribute to cartoon hero Goofy and posing the idea that kids are like cats because "they bring in dirt, not happiness"; then, just when you´re getting to grips with the frightening falsetto and palpable grubbiness of Girly Magazine, it all comes to an end. It´ll leave your head spinning." 3 von 5 Punkten
Rock Sound Februar 2002
"Or, if you prefer, The Least Ibiza Album In The World To Contain A Track Calles "Top Tune Mate!"...EVER!" Actually, "Top Tune.." certainly is, bouncing across the room make a confused and highly threatening steamroller, and it´s far from alone in that sense. Long languishing in the background while their Scandinavian compatriots have come and gone, Mother Goose actuallly deliver broader brushstrokes than many of their contemporaries, what with playing malevolent noisegames on "Village", reclaiming the Wedding Present´s buzzsaws on "Feelies Feeling", unbottling a dEUS-esque yelped insanity on "Girly Magazine" and almost paying Jonathan Richmann a visit during the shuffling fun that is "Snow Dome", and it´s an endearing exploratoriness. It might lead to them misfiring at times but, on the whole, having promised us magic, Mother Goose don´t disappiont." 3 1/2 von 5 Punkten
Get Rhythm Februar 2002
" Mother Goose hail from Finland and, as one might expect from this time of year, Junior Magic, is a dark, sparse, sometimes chilly, but nontheless entertaining slab of noise-pop. At first hearing Junior Magic may seem unrelentingly downbeat but then, just as despair begins to set in almost too deeply, "Top Tune Mate!" bounces out of the wings and warms you up in readiness for "Feelies Feelings" a song that whips up moshpit mayhem left, right and centre even in the smallest of sitting rooms. On further listening there´s a lot of good, if less immediate stuff along the way, "Goofy" is as darkly poetical as sanity will allow, "Twisted By The Pool" I´d like to think, is typical of Finland´s particular take on C&W. "Respect" is a slow burner that builds up and up into a rock solid sonic force that is probably capable of undermining your foundations. Whatever country they come from they inhabit a territory not too distant from the likes of Nick Cave or The Fall and also remind me of the pop I heard in Poland recently especially the Gdansk-based band, Kevin Arnold."
The Irish Times 2. Dezember 2002
"The promotional literature cites Nick Cave and fellow Finn Jimi Tenor as influences, but psychedelic avant-rockers Mother Goose´s sophomore outing displays a nonchalant disregard for contemporary mores. Soaked in whimsy and shot through with flashes of delicate beauty, Junior Magic shrugs a shoulder at convention, wallowing giddily into a melange of slurping synths, rasping fretwork and vocodorised vocals. Repeated listens reveal a dept pop sensibility, sufficient to deflect suspicions that the trio are courting obtuseness because they haven´t worked out how to write proper songs yet. There´s a smidgen too much unfiltered weirdness it´s difficult to begrudge the occasional self-congratulatory lapse."
The Big Issue Jr. Januar 2002
"...Helsinki´s Mother Goose do little to readjust this stereotypical view of the frost-bitten eccentric. Described by their own press release as "Very Finnish", the enigmatic three piece demonstrate the influence of snow-blindness and 23-hour nights while handlily serving as a very necessary slap inthe face for those musical myopics who see the Strokes as the last word in alternative indie craftings.
The murky, hypnotic pagan chants of Modest Dreamer kick off the album, conjuring peculiar visions of midnight firelit rituals Thereafter we lurch from thedrunken stagger of Twisted by The Pool to the shimmering hallucination of Village, while Gekko motors along like a chilly Sonic Youth and the nursery-rhyme of Snow Dome offers an intriguing glimpse as to how late-Sixties Lou Reed might have sounded recorded in an igloo..."
