Strummer Strolls Down One Last "Street"
More information has come to light about Joe Strummer's final studio album. As previously reported, "Streetcore" is due Oct. 7 from Hellcat/Epitaph [6th Sept in Europe, jr]. The set features nine originals and a cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," produced by Rick Rubin. Several other cuts, including opener "Coma Girl" and "Get Down Moses," were a part of Strummer's live set lists before his sudden death last December. The track "Midnight Jam" is an instrumental. Writing on Strummer's official Web site earlier this year, his bandmates in the Mescaleros said, "the four of us just got in there, jammed, slowed the bass down and just dubbed around it, without changing anything."
As for "Redemption Song," Rubin tells Billboard.com the track was recorded in the midst of his sessions with Johnny Cash on the latter's album "American IV: The Man Comes Around." Strummer was in Los Angeles on vacation, but extended his trip in order to spend more time in the studio with Cash and Rubin.
Meanwhile, Strummer's site reports that "an exciting, official film documentary project is about to begin." The site is seeking "personal movie (film, video or digital) footage of Joe from any period of his career, particularly non-concert footage." Fans in possession of such footage are encouraged to e-mail documentary@strummersite.com with details.
