3. SOLOMON BURKE gewinnt GRAMMY
akt. Album - Don't Give Up On Me Fat Possum/Anti Vertrieb SPV
SB DEPARTS NEW YORK CITY WITH A GRAMMY IN HIS POCKET AND A '60 MINUTES'
PIECE UNDER HIS BELT
Long heralded as "The King Of Rock & Soul" and inducted into the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, it wasn't until Sunday night that SOLOMON
BURKE was finally honored with his first Grammy award in a career that
has spanned six decades.
"I am extremely excited, grateful and proud to have received this
honor," Solomon said with Grammy in hand. "And it shows my children and
their children and their children that anything and everything is
possible in this life if you put your heart and soul into the effort."
The award, for Best Contemporary Blues Album, is just the icing on top
of a very tall cake of honors and accolades BISHOP BURKE (as he is often
called) has received for his album DON'T GIVE UP ON ME on Fat
Possum/Anti-. BURKE is also up for four W.C. Handy Blues Awards,
including Blues Album of the Year and Blues Entertainer of the Year,
while the previously unreleased Bob Dylan composition "Stepchild," given
to BURKE for this album, is nominated for Blues Song of the Year.
DON'T GIVE UP ON ME - which also features contributions from the likes
of Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson and Van Morrison and produced
by Joe Henry- has landed BURKE on countless critics' best-of lists,
including #1 Album of the Year and #1 Blues Album of the Year in
England's Mojo, #12 in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll, and "top
ten" recognition from critics for The New York Times, Entertainment
Weekly, and The New Yorker.
With high praise from such far-ranging sources as Fortune (which
asserted, "This is more than a comeback album. This is music that can
save your life.") and Maxim (whose five star review declared, "An
instant classic. Burke could shake heaven and earth just by singing the
tax codes."), it's no wonder that Lesley Stahl from 60 Minutes spent the
week prior to the Grammys with SOLOMON BURKE, interviewing and filming
the legendary father of 21 for an upcoming story on his life and
colorful careers as a soul legend, preacher, and mortician. (Stay tuned
for airdate.)
Since Don't Give Up On Me was released last summer, times have been
busy for the newly crowned Grammy winner. The regal BURKE has twice
opened for The Rolling Stones (at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles and
The Joint in Las Vegas), and once for the Pope (at the Epiphany concert
at St. Chiara's Church in Italy). He returned to his native
Philadelphia, where the mayor declared July 19, 2002 "Solomon Burke
Day," and has turned in several rousing television performances
including
the Late Show W/David Letterman (twice), the Tonight Show W/Jay Leno and
the Wayne Brady Show.
Grateful for both his lasting success and his latest recognition,
SOLOMON BURKE continues his current run with a new single, "None Of Us
Are Free" (featuring fellow Grammy winners the Blind Boys of Alabama),
and as part of the upcoming Martin Scorsese-produced feature film
"Salute To The Blues" recently filmed at Radio City Music Hall in New
York.

9. DANIEL LANOIS declares Producing Moratorium
Daniel Lanois, known for his production work for such artists as Bob
Dylan and U2, is "not producing anything for about a year."
The artist/producer made the declaration yesterday (March 13) in
response to a question posed during his keynote address at the South By
Southwest (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas. "I want to come back
to it fresh," he added.
The Canadian native opened the session with a stream-of-conscience
review of his career, from the basement studio he started in his
mother's home to his work with some of the biggest names in music,
including Dylan, U2, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Emmylou Harris.
Referring to himself in the third person and often calling himself
"little Danny Lanois," he described the process that has driven him to
bring out the best in himself and others as "soul mining."
Currently, he is focused on his own career, which will resume with the
April 22 release of "Shine," his first album for Epitaph's Anti- label.
When making the decision to sign with the imprint, he said he turned to
Anti artist Tom Waits. "I called up Tom and asked, 'What do you think of
these geezers?' He said, 'That's the best treatment I've ever had.'"
Sitting at a pedal steel guitar, Lanois played "Transmitter," an
instrumental that appears on the new set. "I try to play it every day,"
he said of the instrument, which he began playing at the age of 9, "to
remain grounded." Later he performed the album's "Sometimes" as an
example of what he felt was a strongly written song. "What never seems
to go out of fashion is a song that rings true somehow."
When forced to name the best album he's ever produced, Lanois chose
Dylan's 2000 Columbia set "Time Out of Mind," but said, "I'm proud of
all of them, and it's not fair to simply pick Bob's. More importantly,
Bob write songs from an interesting perspective."
"I work purely by invitation and [I] fly by the seat of my pants," he
said, describing his production style. "Believing that somebody has a
lot to offer is an important part of my criteria."
In closing, Lanois offered encouragement to the unsigned and
up-and-coming artists that attend SXSW to further their careers. "You
hear a lot about the state of the music industry," he remarked. "At any
given moment there's a new window of opportunity. It's up to the
innovators to find it."
