1. Deutsche Homepage und Verlinkung (SideOneDummy / Cargo)
Seit einigen Tagen findet Ihr unter www.sideonedummy.de nun endlich auch die deutsche Version des amerikanischen Labels SIDEONEDUMMY im Netz.
Noch sind hauptsächlich US-Seiten in der Link-Sektion gelistet. Das soll sich in Zukunft aber ändern! Das Label hat unter www.sideonedummy.de eine Seite eingerichtet, auf der Ihr Euch die aktuellen SIDEONEDUMMY Online-Banner runterladen könnt. Nach einem drei Alben dauernden Ausflug ins Major-Lager haben die Skacore-Götter bei SideOneDummy Records endlich ein neues Zuhause gefunden! In wenigen Wochen erscheint bei uns (noch vor dem Release-Date in den USA!) das neue und bisher beste Album der Jungs.
Produziert wurde zusammen mit Bill Stevenson (Descendents / Black Flag). Der Titel wird lauten "A match & some gasoline", das Cover-Artwork kann bereits unter www.sideonedummy.de angesehen werden!

2. Neue Homepage, neue Bands, Verlosung und mehr (Defiance / Zomba)
Nach drei Monaten harter Arbeit präsentiert sich die Defiance-Homepage www.defiancerecords.de im neuen Look. Es gibt ein modernes Design, mehr Infos und direkt auf der Seite das Defiance-Radio. Zum Relaunch startet das Label das "High Five Give-A-Way": Man hat fünf Möglichkeiten CDs, Shirts, Sticker oder Pins zu gewinnen. Reinschauen lohnt sich also.
Unter der Rubrik "Neue Media - Links" findet Ihr in diesem Newsletter übrigens neue MP3-Links von Engrave, Gameface, Miracle Of 86, Standstill und National Anthems.

Okay, it's not exactly a give-a-way, we're going to make you work for this one but it will all be worth it when you're the envy of every kid on your block, sporting all the latest Defiance swag. We're giving you five ways to win a Definace package filled with free cd's, records, t-shirts, stickers, pins and whatever else we can fit a logo on and appropriately, each method of enterance into the High Five Give-A-Way revolves around one of five Defiance bands: Miracle of 86, Standstill, Piebald, Engrave and The National Anthems.
- The first way that you'll be able to get your hands on all that free swag from Defiance is for all you aspiring artists out there. We challenge you to create a sticker and pin design for the Miracle of '86. Defiance and Mo86 are currently working out the plans for an upcoming European tour and need new pins and stickers. To get a real feel for the Miracle check out the MP3 of the upcoming album, "every last word," to be released on June 2nd. The winning design will of course be used on stickers and pins on the upcoming tour.
- The next strategy you may utilize to win so many great Defiance products involves Standstill. Anyone who has seen these boys from Barcelona live can attest to the energy they exude from the stage. Your task is to capture that energy. Just go to one of the upcoming shows, the tour kicks off May 1st in Saarbrücken, Germany and photograph the band as they sweat and gyrate across the stage. The best live shot will be displayed on our homepage and the winner will of course be the recipient of one of the Defiance free stuff packages.
- The next task also involves a band, a camera and ingenuity. This time get a photo of yourself with Piebald - naked, dressed up or whatever seems funny at the time, and not only with you win cool shit, but Defiance will use it as a promo photo for the band.
The Piebald tour just started in the U.K. and they will be on continental Europe starting the first, so you will have plenty of opportunities to catch them over the next 4 weeks.
- Once again we need you to put your artistic skills to work for us. Engrave will be touring with Eaves, their friends from Aachen, at the end of August and are in need of a black & white DinA2 tour poster. Download the MP3 to get your creative juices flowing. The best poster artwork will be used as an actual tour poster and the designer will win the Defiance prize pack!
- Like Swedes? We do. The National Anthems should be enough to convince you that this country is pumping out some hot shit for 2003. Just signed to Defiance, we think their new album will be a pretty good reason to live this year. But, as far as we are concerned, the band needs a new logo for posters and shirts when they start their European tour after the release of their album. For those of you not down with Sweden, they are real Elk heads up there... good platform for a logo? You decide. Anyway, their demo version of "unknown road" can now be downloaded from the Defiance website, so check it out!

Zwei neue Bands: The National Anthems und The Copperpot Journals
Contrary to popular belief, IKEA and the Hives are not the only things Sweden has to offer. Defiance has found four Swedes more than worthy of paying attention to, The National Anthems! Just two weeks ago, we sealed the deal and Defiance is now proud to welcome The National Anthems to our little family. We are all super psyched to add this four-piece to our roster and without exageration, we are confident that they are on their way to becoming one of the leading European indie rockers of 2003! Check out the MP3 of "unknown road" to satisfy your appetite until the full length is released in July.
Defiance Records has overlooked the longstanding football rivalry between Germany and England, at least until the Euro 2004, to sign our first English band, the Copperpot Journals! Poppy indie vocals meet dynamic beats with a twist. Having shared a stage with Pale in the UK, the Defiance team saw this amazing band live and knew immediately that we could not afford to overlook this potent quartet. As we speak, they're in the studio recording their debut full length which we will be releasing in cooperation with Firefly Records in the UK. Check out the their new demo song in our MP3 section coming next week!

Mark your calenders! Defiance Records is celebrating our 50th release with the upcoming Engrave full-length. Piebald, Standstill, Waterdown, Somehow Hollow and Mournful will be helping Engrave and Defiance to commemorate this historic event in the life of Defiance Records on the 3rd of May! im Zuge des diesmonatigen Release des neuen Turbonegro-Neckbrakers "Scandinavian Leather" und dem damit einhergehenden Kniefall tausender Turbojünger würdigen auch wir die Reunion der Deathpunks mit mehr als einer popeligen 4-Seiten Titelstory.
Die 86. Ausgabe von unclesally*s erscheint in einer limitierten Edition von 50 komplett in dunkles Denim eingeschlagenen Jeans-Covern.
Diese Jeansumschläge sind auf der Frontseite mit "unclesally*s 86"-Logo und dem "Turbonegro"-Schriftzug bestickt. Das Original-Coverportrait von Hank Van Helvete (Fotograf: Erik Weiss) ist auf die Frontseite des Denim-Deckels aufgenäht!
Die Rückseite der limitierten Edition ist mit der Code-Nummer 1/50 bis 50/50 bestickt und wurde von der kompletten Band in Gold und Silber signiert.
Zwei der 50 Exemplare stehen zwischen dem 8. und 18 Mai auf www.ebay.de zur Versteigerung bereit (Suchbegriff: Turbonegro - unclesally*s 86). Die Erlöse gehen an das Berliner SO 36, den sagenumwobenen Live-Club auf der Oranienstraße. Das SO 36 muss innerhalb von sechs Wochen für (kalkulierte) 150.000 Euro einen komplett neuen Hallenboden einziehen, die damit einhergehenden Umsatzeinbußen nicht eingerechnet.

6. Teddy Edwards: R.I.P (1924 - 2003)
Teddy Edwards, one of the finest tenor saxophonists from the bebop era, died in Los Angeles on Sunday 20th April. He was 78 years old.
Edwards - often credited by fellow musicians as the first tenor player to explore bebop - leaves a huge legacy of recorded music, stretching from the Forties right through to the end of the Nineties.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, on 26th April 1924, Edwards moved to Los Angeles in 1945, first coming to attention the following year when, with trumpeter Howard McGhee's group, he recorded the groundbreaking bebop tune, Up In Dodo's Room.
By the end of that decade Edwards was sufficiently well known to front his own bands. In 1949 he was also one of the first members of the Lighthouse All Stars, the group based at the famous Lighthouse Club in Hermosa Beach.
Five years later, in 1954, Edwards was invited to join the Max Roach Quintet, a group that also featured legendary drummer Clifford Brown. Edwards' tenor perfectly complemented Brown's eloquent style, a partnership also helped by Teddy's growing talents as a composer. Indeed, the Quintet's recording of Edwards' classic Sunset Eyes is a testament to the effectiveness of the relationship.
By the mid-Fifties Edwards was long established as a regular at West Coast festivals and clubs and, over the next few years, he worked with such diverse musicians as Benny Goodman, Les McCann, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Hampton Hawes, Earl Hines and Gerald Wilson. He also wrote songs for Nancy Wilson, Jimmy Witherspoon and Ernie Andrews.
In 1978 Edwards came to Europe for the first of what became regular visits. Among the dates were festivals in Norway, Holland and Belgium.
Edwards' talents came to the attention of a wider audience when, in 1982, he teamed up with the singer Tom Waits on his Oscar-nominated soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's film, One From the Heart. Edwards also joined Waits on a tour of Australia and New Zealand that same year. It was the start of a lifetime friendship, a relationship that also included Waits' appearance on Teddy Edwards' 1991 album, Mississippi Lad.
Says Waits: "Teddy Edwards always sounded like he was drinking champagne on a train and wise to the ways of the world. A consummate arranger and composer, Teddy Edwards was one of the original architects of bebop. An elegant man with a large heart and generous spirit, he always carried himself with poise and confidence.
"Kathleen (Brennan - Tom Waits' songwriting partner and wife) and I have lost a friend, the world of music has lost one of the most innovative presidents of jazz and we all have the gift of the great music he left behind."
Despite recurring illness, Edwards continued to play and record throughout the Nineties. His schedule included European festivals and UK tours as well as shows throughout the United States. A jazz player of unique talent, Edwards will be remembered as a consistently inventive and dexterous musician.
